ABOUT APO

We are a non-profit, national, co-ed service fraternity that has set the standard for college campus-based volunteerism since 1925. We have active chapters on over 350 campuses, and we have striven to help each individual member develop leadership skills, experience friendships on many levels, and provide service to others. The Alpha Gamma Phi chapter at Northern Kentucky University strives to instill our cardinal principles of leadership, friendship, and service in all of our members so they can become better citizens in their community. We coordinate many service, leadership, and social events each week that you are able to participate in.

Our Founding

Alpha Phi Omega began in 1925 when a man, Frank Reed Horton, returned from the WWI and made a resolve to help "young people get the right start in life by holding up before them a 'standard of manhood' that would withstand the test of time" and "try to help the nations of the world settle their disputes in a sensible manner." Upon returning to college, he found that the boy scout ideals was the standard he was searching for and founded an organization based upon those ideals. Over the next 87 years, the organization has evolved into the upstanding organization it is today!

The chapter at Northern Kentucky University was chartered in 1992. It began as a small group of students working to make a difference, and has since evolved into a group of over 60 students!

Service

What sets Alpha Phi Omega apart from other fraternities is their dedication to service. Service is the guiding principle that Alpha Phi Omega was founded on, and with a service program that includes everything from helping rebuild homes in New Orleans, to holding a carnival for children at the YMCA, writing letters to soldiers and everything in between, Alpha Phi Omega succeeds in its mission to serve the fraternity, campus, community, and nation. With ties to the Boy Scouts of America, Alpha Phi Omega is one organization (albeit the largest) with a continuous history of service, and our brothers work tirelessly to maintain this status.

Leadership

Alpha Phi Omega creates leadership opportunities in every way. Brothers don't have to be a member of an executive board to be a leader. Leaders exist everywhere, whether they lead by words, action, or example. In APO, we try to learn how leaders lead in a variety of ways, and help people find the style the like the best. The national organization provides leadership programs such as APO LEADS, webinars, and yearly conferences where members can attend leadership development lectures given by APO alumni and staff.

Friendship

College is more than just going to classes. It's an experience. A journey. There are trials and hardships that only your peers can understand. In Alpha Phi Omega, our brothers care deeply about each other and are always ready to help a brother in need. Alpha Phi Omega offers more than friendship, but an opportunity to create bonds and lasting relationships through our shared values. Aside from group service opportunities, Alpha Phi Omega helps create these bonds by programming exciting events and outings and our Big/Little mentor program. Brothers also get to make friends from other schools at conferences.

"My favorite aspect about APO was and is how welcoming they are. They took me and my craziness and made me feel right at home like no one else at college had. I found a family that was supporting, fun, and loving. I feel confident in facing down any challenge knowing that my brothers have my back."
